I am here because I would like moms (and dads) to know there are hacks and priorities for different stages of this rapidly transiting phase of life. I have birthed a child in the United States and experienced the nature of the postpartum and early childhood journey. I understand the unique stressors that exist for us – not just moms but dads too. I want the mother of a new child to know she is not alone. She doesn’t have to endure needless suffering. She does not need to be labelled with a disease in order to receive care and support. Nor does she need to endlessly rely on medications or just 'time' for her recovery. Small investments in her health can save months and years of agony. ‘Medical’ Post partum care in the US is virtually non-existent as all the attention shifts to the child. Ayurveda has a deep understanding of the support needed particularly for mothers. Although it cannot be replicated as is trans-culturally, the most useful elements of it, can. For example, there is an increase of ‘vaata’ from the ‘vacuum’ generated post delivery. There is a need to retone the abdomen, prepare for digestion of those additional breastfeeding calories while losing weight and maintaining lactation. This requires strategic inputs and its educational awareness is recommended for all parents-to-be. Ayurveda also addresses challenges of milk supply, gut health, physical and mental well-being as the estrogen drastically plummets post-partum coupled with sleep deprivation. This is also the optimal time to heal as the body is hustling to get back. The right support can potentially enable better metabolism long-term, increased strength and pain-free early parenthood. And yeah, those pregnancy symptoms & conditions; nausea, hyperacidity, back pains, swellings, pre diabetes, pre-hypertension and insulin resistance– can all have natural safe-time tested alternatives, many of which have been studied scientifically.
